Sitra (arabisch Ψ³ΨͺΨ±Ψ©, DMG Sitra) ist eine Insel in Bahrain mit ca. 42.000 Einwohnern. Sie liegt sΓΌdlich von Manama und Nabih Saleh.

Der Großteil der Einwohner wohnt in den sieben Dârfern Wadyan, Charidschiyya, Marguban, Qurayya, Mahazza, Sufala und Abul Aish.

Wirtschaft

Im nΓΆrdlichen Teil der Insel liegt ein Industriegebiet. Die Γ–lreserven der Bahrain Petroleum Company (BAPCO) werden im sΓΌdlichen Sitra gelagert.

Die Raffinerie auf Sitra wurde 1936 gegrΓΌndet. Sie ist damit die Γ€lteste aktive Raffinerie im Persischen Golf.cite-ref-1[1]

Geschichte

Im Zuge der Proteste in Bahrain 2011 wurden am 16. MΓ€rz 2011 mehr als 200 Personen bei KΓ€mpfen zwischen Demonstranten und RegierungsanhΓ€ngern durch Schusswaffen verletzt.cite-ref-hilfe-2-0[2]
